Single Room Cabins

Our cabin range has been designed with the aim of providing a do-it-yourself, practical, sustainable and economical range of buildings that are not only easy to build, but are easy to maintain as well.

The original design brief for this particular range was to provide buildings that are suitable for the most inaccessible, difficult, and largely unattended sites. The idea came from a request to provide a cabin for a bush block that was accessible only by 40kms of dirt road, the last few kilometres of which was purely 4WD track. The cabin would be left unattended for 2 to 3 months at a time, and would therefore need to be designed to provide the owners with a pest and bushfire resistant building, which was also easy to maintain. It would also need to be relatively simple to build, and also restrict the use of power tools to a minimum as all power would need to be supplied by a small generator. Obviously, the length and size of the components would need to be limited so that they could be carried both by 4WD ute, and by hand where required to get them to the designated building site.

A Typical Frame Section of Our Cabin Range

With over 7 years of experience in the steel portal framed building sector of the construction industry, we knew it would be possible to produce a building that could meet these needs by keeping the design based on a bolt together system for the framework, using custom cut and punched C and Z purlins. This would allow the entire framework and studwork of the building to be fully stood and braced without the use of any power tools. By using a steel framed, bolt together system, it also allowed us to produce a building that when properly braced, would be able to stand for a long period of time without being cladded with no fear of the frame rotting or blowing down in the meantime. As the owners of the block were school teachers, and were only able to stay at the block during school holidays, being able to build in two stages would be a massive advantage. It would allow them to build the frame without the use of a generator in the first set of holidays, before returning 10 weeks later with a generator to clad the building.

Of course, if you don't mind the constant drone (or roar in some cases) and power dips of a 'gennie', or if you have power on site, the idea of ratcheting up a frame may not appeal to you. If you still wish to use a fully bolted design, the use of a 'rattle gun' (either air or electric powered) will dramatically reduce construction time. Alternatively we can also provide a 'lighter' design if so desired, the majority of which can be put together using 'structural tek' screws, but would still maintain some bolted connections in critical locations.

As with our other ranges, we are more than happy to customise a cabin to your needs if our standard designs are unsuitable. Our field of drafting and design expertise has been gained by either customising, or, designing from the ground up; steel framed factories, warehouses, rural sheds, cabins, garages, industrial awnings, school sun shelters etc. so we are more than capable of working out a suitable solution based on your requirements.
